Design for Manufacturing (DfM) is a product development method that optimally advances the design into the production processes so that it will run smoothly in production at a later stage. The following goals being: a reduction of cost and especially bringing the product "in time to market".

This means making the right choice of the manufacturing processes at the design stage, establishing the manufacturing process and that the product is fine-tuned to that process.

The three key factors for successful product development are:
1. Good product function.
2. The total development lead time.
3. Integral cost.
